The direct daytime ICE introduced in December 2024 links the French and German capitals without changing trains. It crosses the Rhine near Strasbourg and uses both French and German high-speed infrastructure. Seat reservations are compulsory on the international ICE segment, unlike many domestic German ICE journeys. Check the station name carefully: the direct train calls at Frankfurt (Main) Süd rather than Frankfurt's main station.

The direct Paris - Berlin ICE offers Second Class with 2+2 seating and First Class with 2+1 seating. Both have power sockets and Wi-Fi; First Class provides wider seats and more space. Advance and flexible fares are ticket conditions, not additional carriage classes. Connecting TGV INOUI services also have First and Second Class, but facilities depend on the train used for each leg.

Practical Information for ICE Travelers

Paris - Berlin ICE luggage travels with you in the passenger compartment, not in a checked-baggage hold. If your itinerary includes TGV INOUI, check that train's separate baggage limits too.

Luggage Allowance

On the direct ICE, carry hand luggage plus one larger item that you can lift and stow yourself. DB does not specify a universal kilogram or suitcase-dimension limit for ordinary ICE luggage; 70 x 50 x 30 cm is a useful rack-fit guideline, not a mandatory maximum.

Storage Facilities

ICE 3 trains have overhead shelves and luggage racks within the seating areas. Use these or space beneath your seat, and keep aisles, doors and wheelchair spaces clear throughout the Paris - Berlin trip.

Special Items

The direct ICE 3 used on Paris - Berlin has no reservable spaces for assembled bicycles. A folded bicycle can travel as luggage if safely stowed; instruments and sports equipment must also fit without blocking circulation. Check each train separately when booking a connection.

The direct ICE connects central Paris and central Berlin without airport transfers, although its roughly 8-hour journey exceeds flight time. Flights take about 1 hour 45 minutes airborne, before airport access and check-in. Coaches commonly require 13-17 hours; rail offers one direct daytime departure plus connecting departures rather than an hourly direct service.
