Practical Information for TGV Travelers

Luggage icon
On the Paris - Munich TGV, label every bag and bring only luggage you can carry and store yourself. On the double-deck train, bags must stay out of stairs, doors, and aisles.
Luggage Allowance
The TGV allowance is two bags per person, each no larger than 90 x 70 x 50 cm, plus one small bag up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm. There is no fixed kilogram limit, but you must be able to carry all your luggage yourself.
Storage Facilities
The double-deck TGV has luggage racks near carriage entrances, overhead shelves for smaller items, and space between some back-to-back seats. An upper-deck seat can involve carrying your bag up a narrow staircase; keep valuables with you.
Special Items
Do not assume the international TGV accepts an assembled bicycle. A dismantled bicycle must be in a labelled cover no larger than 130 x 90 cm; folded bicycles must meet the applicable baggage dimensions. Check the specific rules for skis, sports equipment, and cased musical instruments before reserving.

The direct TGV links central Paris and central Munich in roughly 5 hours 40 minutes, without airport transfers. Its once-daily frequency makes departure time more restrictive than routes offering several trains an hour, although connecting trains add options. Coaches generally need around 12 hours, while a flight takes about 1 hour 30 minutes airborne before airport access and formalities. Rail generally has lower greenhouse-gas emissions per passenger than flying on this corridor; bus and air prices below are indicative rather than live quotes.

FAQ about the Paris - Munich Route

How much is the train from Paris to Munich?

Indicative one-way fares run from about EUR 39 to EUR 180 (USD 43 to USD 198), from discounted Second Class to higher-priced flexible tickets. The cheapest train ticket is usually a restricted advance fare, not a non-reserved ticket. Prices shown are starting from; final fares depend on class, time of booking, and availability.

How fast is the Paris to Munich TGV?

The TGV can reach 320 km/h (199 mph) on the French LGV Est high-speed line. Speeds are lower on other sections, including the Rhine crossing and approaches to major stations, so this is not its average speed between Paris and Munich.

How do I book Paris to Munich train tickets?

Enter Paris Est, München Hbf, and your date on Rail Monsters, then choose the direct TGV or a connecting itinerary and select your class. Check the ticket's exchange conditions and delivery instructions before payment. Rail Monsters accepts bookings 6 to 12 months ahead, and its iOS and Android apps let you manage the reservation; booking confirmation is not necessarily the issued travel ticket.

How long does the Paris to Munich train take?

The quickest direct TGV schedules take about 5 hours 40 minutes between Paris Est and München Hbf. There is normally one direct departure daily; journeys with changes have different total times. Check the date-specific result, especially when engineering work changes the route or stops.

Do rail passes cover the Paris to Munich TGV?

A Eurail or Interrail Global Pass valid in both France and Germany can cover the journey, but the international TGV requires a paid seat reservation and passholder availability can be limited. A France-only pass does not cover the complete international trip to Munich. Rail Monsters sells individual tickets for this route.
