Venice to Rome Route Overview

The Venice to Rome route crosses northern and central Italy, moving from the Venetian lagoon edge through the Veneto plain, the Bologna rail node, the Apennine high-speed tunnels, and Tuscany before entering Lazio. A distinctive feature is the passage through Florence's high-speed corridor, where many services either call at Firenze Santa Maria Novella or use the dedicated high-speed approach to reduce travel time. Seats on Frecciarossa and Italo high-speed trains are reservation-only, so every ticket is tied to a specific train and seat. Lowest fares sell out first on Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings, holiday periods, and major event dates in Rome.

Practical Information for High-Speed Train Travelers

Luggage icon
Frecciarossa and Italo passengers carry luggage onto the train and keep it in the coach. Rules are more flexible than airline baggage, but large items should fit onboard storage areas.
Luggage Allowance
Trenitalia Frecciarossa does not set a standard checked-bag allowance for regular luggage, but passengers must carry and store their own bags safely. Italo generally allows luggage that fits onboard racks and vestibule spaces; in Smart class, very large suitcases may be limited to about 75 x 53 x 30 cm on some services.
Storage Facilities
Frecciarossa and Italo trainsets have overhead racks for cabin bags, spaces between back-to-back seats for medium cases, and larger luggage shelves near coach entrances. Keep valuables at your seat, especially when the train stops at Bologna, Florence, or Rome.
Special Items
Folded bicycles, skis, snowboards, and musical instruments can travel if packed and stored without blocking aisles or doors. Fully assembled bicycles are not normally accepted on Frecciarossa or Italo high-speed services unless covered by a specific bike policy for that train.

High-speed trains run from Venezia Santa Lucia or Venezia Mestre to Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina, keeping the trip close to city centers at both ends. Long-distance buses between Venice and Rome usually take 7 to 8.5 hours and often use Tronchetto, Mestre, Tiburtina, or Anagnina rather than the most central districts. Flights from Venice Marco Polo to Rome Fiumicino take about 1 hour 10 minutes in the air, but airport transfers, security, and boarding time add significantly to the total trip. Rail also has a lower carbon footprint than flying on this domestic corridor.
