Iiyama is a rail hub in northern Nagano Prefecture on the Hokuriku Shinkansen corridor between Tokyo and the Sea of Japan side of Honshu. The city has one main passenger train station, Iiyama Station, served by JR East Shinkansen and regional services. Its role is smaller than Nagano Station, but important for rail access to northern Nagano and the Chikuma River valley.
Trains from Iiyama include Hokuriku Shinkansen services on the Tokyo - Kanazawa axis and local JR East services on the Iiyama Line. Iiyama Station handles both long-distance reserved-seat Shinkansen travel and regional rail trips through Nagano and Niigata prefectures. The city does not have a direct airport rail link, so airport travel usually involves changing at larger rail hubs such as Nagano or Tokyo.
Routes from Iiyama run south toward Nagano and the Tokyo corridor, northwest toward Joetsumyoko, Toyama, and Kanazawa, and along the Iiyama Line toward Togari-Nozawaonsen, Tokamachi, and Echigo-Kawaguchi. Book trains from and to Iiyama online at Rail Monsters.
