Kagoshima is the southern rail terminus of the Kyushu Shinkansen and a key JR Kyushu hub for southern Japan. The city has two principal passenger stations: Kagoshima-Chuo, the main long-distance train station, and Kagoshima Station, a smaller regional stop closer to the older port-side rail corridor. This role makes Kagoshima the southern end point for bullet train services through Kyushu.
Services from Kagoshima include Kyushu Shinkansen trains running north from Kagoshima-Chuo, limited express services across southern Kyushu, and local JR Kyushu trains on regional lines. Kagoshima-Chuo handles most train tickets for long-distance rail, while Kagoshima Station mainly supports local and regional movements within the city rail area. There is no direct airport rail link to Kagoshima Airport, so rail passengers usually connect by road between the airport and Kagoshima-Chuo.
Trains from Kagoshima run north toward Kumamoto, Hakata, and Shin-Osaka, east toward Miyazaki, and south toward Ibusuki on the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line. Regional services also connect areas around Kirishima and Satsuma Peninsula communities. Book trains from and to Kagoshima online at Rail Monsters.
