Inbound long-distance trains reach Kitakyushu mainly at Kokura Station. Shinkansen services from Hakata arrive in around 15 to 20 minutes, while trains from Hiroshima reach Kokura in about 50 minutes. Services from Shin-Osaka arrive in around 2h10m, and through trains from Tokyo typically take roughly 4h45m to 5h. From eastern Kyushu, JR Kyushu limited express services from Beppu arrive in around 1h15m and trains from Oita reach Kokura in about 1h25m. Regional services from Shimonoseki cross the Kanmon area and arrive at Kokura in about 15 minutes, with onward local stops at other Kitakyushu stations.

Kitakyushu is a major rail hub at the northern tip of Kyushu, positioned between Fukuoka, the Kanmon Strait, and western Honshu. The city has several passenger stations, with Kokura Station acting as the main long-distance train station. JR West serves the Sanyo Shinkansen at Kokura, while JR Kyushu operates conventional intercity and regional trains across northern Kyushu. Kokura Station is the main point for train tickets and long-distance departures, while Mojiko, Kurosaki, Orio, and Tobata handle important regional flows.
