Minamata is a rail hub in southern Kumamoto Prefecture on the west coast of Kyushu. The city has two main passenger stations: Shin-Minamata Station for the Kyushu Shinkansen and Minamata Station for regional services on the Hisatsu Orange Railway. JR Kyushu and Hisatsu Orange Railway connect Minamata with the wider Kyushu rail network.
Trains from Minamata include JR Kyushu Shinkansen services at Shin-Minamata, giving the city direct access to the high-speed corridor between Fukuoka, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima. Hisatsu Orange Railway trains use Minamata Station and also stop at Shin-Minamata, linking coastal communities between Yatsushiro and Satsumasendai. Local inter-station travel between Minamata Station and Shin-Minamata is handled by the same regional line.
Rail routes from Minamata run north toward Yatsushiro, Kumamoto, and Hakata, and south toward Izumi, Sendai, and Kagoshima-Chuo. Regional trains follow the coast through towns in Kumamoto and Kagoshima prefectures, while bullet train services connect Minamata with major Kyushu cities.
