Nan'yo sits in southern Yamagata Prefecture on the Yamagata Shinkansen corridor, giving the city direct rail access to the Tokyo area and major stops across inland Tohoku. The city has one main long-distance rail station, Akayu Station, and is served by JR East and Yamagata Railway. Akayu is the key train station for train tickets involving Nan'yo and the surrounding Okitama area.
JR East operates Yamagata Shinkansen Tsubasa services and conventional Ou Main Line trains through Akayu Station. Yamagata Railway operates the Flower Nagai Line from Akayu toward local communities in the western part of the Okitama region. There is no dedicated airport rail service in Nan'yo, so rail passengers usually connect through Yamagata or other regional transport points for airport access.
Rail routes from Nan'yo run south toward Yonezawa, Fukushima, Koriyama, and Tokyo, north toward Kaminoyama-Onsen, Yamagata, and Shinjo, and west on the Flower Nagai Line toward Miyauchi, Nagai, and Arato. Book trains from and to Nan'yo online at Rail Monsters.
