Shimonoseki is a key rail city at the western end of Honshu, where lines from Yamaguchi Prefecture meet the Kanmon rail crossing into Kyushu. The city has two main passenger stations: Shimonoseki Station for conventional JR services and Shin-Shimonoseki Station for Sanyo Shinkansen trains. JR West operates the main Honshu-side network, while JR Kyushu services connect across the strait toward Kitakyushu.
Train services from Shimonoseki include Sanyo Shinkansen high-speed trains at Shin-Shimonoseki, local and regional trains on the Sanyo Main Line, and services on the Sanin Main Line along the Sea of Japan side. Shimonoseki Station is the city rail stop for conventional trains, while Shin-Shimonoseki handles bullet train services and transfers between Shinkansen and local lines.
Rail routes from Shimonoseki run east toward Shin-Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, Okayama, and Osaka, south through the Kanmon Tunnel toward Moji, Kokura, and Hakata, and north along the Sanin corridor toward Nagato-shi and regional towns in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
