Tsuruga is a key rail interchange in Fukui Prefecture and the current western terminus of the Hokuriku Shinkansen. The city has one primary long-distance train station, Tsuruga Station, where JR West high-speed trains meet limited express and regional services. Its rail role changed significantly with the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension, making Tsuruga the transfer point between Tokyo-side high-speed services and conventional limited express trains toward western Japan.
Services from Tsuruga include Hokuriku Shinkansen trains, Thunderbird limited express trains for the Kyoto and Osaka corridor, Shirasagi limited express trains for the Maibara and Nagoya corridor, Hapi-Line Fukui regional trains, and JR West Obama Line local services. Tsuruga Station is the main train station for long-distance train tickets, while local stops in the city handle regional movements only.
Rail routes from Tsuruga run east and north toward Fukui, Kanazawa, Toyama, and Tokyo; south toward Kyoto and Osaka; southeast toward Maibara and Nagoya; and west along the Obama Line toward Obama and Higashi-Maizuru. Book trains from and to Tsuruga online at Rail Monsters.
