Utsunomiya is a major rail hub in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo on the Tohoku Shinkansen corridor. The city has two principal passenger rail stations: JR Utsunomiya Station for Shinkansen and JR regional services, and Tobu Utsunomiya Station for Tobu Railway regional trains. JR East is the main operator at Utsunomiya Station, while Tobu Railway serves the city from its separate terminal.
Trains from Utsunomiya include JR East high-speed services on the Tohoku Shinkansen, regional trains on the Utsunomiya Line toward the Tokyo area, and JR Nikko Line services toward western Tochigi. The Karasuyama Line also links the Utsunomiya area with smaller communities to the east. Tobu Railway provides regional services from Tobu Utsunomiya Station toward the Tobu network via Shin-Tochigi.
Rail routes from Utsunomiya run south toward Tokyo, Ueno, Omiya, and the wider Kanto rail network, north toward Koriyama, Fukushima, Sendai, and Tohoku, and west toward Kanuma and Nikko.
