The key difference is whether your seat is guaranteed.

• Reserved tickets: Include a specific seat and coach number — your place is held for you, and no one else can sit there. These are common on high-speed, long-distance, and international trains.

• Non-reserved tickets: Allow you to board any coach in the permitted class and take any available seat. First come, first served. You’re not guaranteed to sit, especially during peak hours.

Rail Monsters always shows whether a ticket includes a reserved seat before you check out. If it's non-reserved, you’ll see a clear message like “Free Seating” or “No seat assignment included.”

Often, yes — non-reserved tickets are cheaper, but they come with trade-offs.

They are usually only available:

• On local or regional trains

• For same-day or flexible travel

• Without assigned departure times

They’re great for spontaneous trips or short distances, but not ideal if you’re traveling with luggage, children, or in groups, as seating can’t be guaranteed.

After booking, Rail Monsters always shows this clearly. You’ll either see:

• “Includes reserved seat: Coach 5, Seat 21A”

• Or “Non-reserved seating — board any coach in your class”

If the ticket is non-reserved, we recommend arriving early — especially during weekends or holidays — to find a good seat.
