High-speed G‑series services cover almost the entire Shanghai to Fenghuanggucheng route with one easy transfer. The fastest combinations run from Shanghai Hongqiao along the Shanghai–Kunming High‑Speed Railway to Huaihua South at 300–350 km/h (186–217 mph), then continue on the Zhangjiajie–Jishou–Huaihua high‑speed line to Fenghuanggucheng, also operated at up to 300–350 km/h (186–217 mph). Typical travel time is about 6.5–8.5 hours depending on the connection, with limited stops at major hubs such as Hangzhou East, Nanchang West, Changsha South, and Huaihua South. Trains are usually CR400 “Fuxing” EMUs, with some CRH380 sets on parts of the Shanghai–Changsha segment (around 300–310 km/h, 186–193 mph). Seating includes Second, First, and Business Class, plus power outlets and trolley service.
Conventional Z/T/K overnight trains from central Shanghai Station to Huaihua or Jishou use the classic network at around 120–160 km/h (75–99 mph) and take roughly 15–20 hours. These offer Hard/Soft Seat and Hard/Soft Sleeper berths. From Huaihua or Jishou you then make a short high‑speed hop to Fenghuanggucheng. Choose the G‑series route for the shortest end‑to‑end time; classic sleepers suit travelers who prefer overnight travel and lower fares.
