Kunming is the main rail hub of Yunnan Province and a key junction in southwest China. The city has two primary passenger stations: Kunming Railway Station near the city center and Kunming South Railway Station on the national high-speed rail network. China Railway operates all main intercity and long-distance passenger services serving Kunming.
Trains from Kunming include high-speed services on the Shanghai-Kunming and Nanning-Kunming corridors, regional intercity trains within Yunnan, conventional long-distance trains, and cross-border trains on the China-Laos Railway. Kunming South handles most high-speed departures, while Kunming Railway Station remains important for central-city access, regional trains, and selected long-distance services.
Rail routes from Kunming run east toward Guiyang, Changsha, and Shanghai, southeast toward Nanning and Guangzhou, north toward Chengdu and Chongqing, west across Yunnan toward Dali and Lijiang, and south on the China-Laos Railway toward Pu'er, Xishuangbanna, and Vientiane.
