Iwakuni is a rail stop in Yamaguchi Prefecture on the western section of Japan's Sanyo corridor. The city has two main passenger stations: Iwakuni Station for conventional JR West services and Shin-Iwakuni Station for Sanyo Shinkansen trains. Its rail role is split between regional travel along the Inland Sea side of western Honshu and limited high-speed access on the Osaka - Fukuoka axis.
Trains from Iwakuni include JR West local and rapid services on the Sanyo Main Line, regional trains on the Gantoku Line, and Kodama Shinkansen services at Shin-Iwakuni. Iwakuni Station handles most local train station departures for Hiroshima, Miyajimaguchi, Yanai, Tokuyama, and other nearby cities, while Shin-Iwakuni serves high-speed trains that stop between Hiroshima and Shin-Yamaguchi.
Rail routes from Iwakuni run east toward Hiroshima, Miyajimaguchi, and the wider Chugoku region, west toward Tokuyama, Shin-Yamaguchi, and Kyushu connections, and inland via the Gantoku Line toward Kushigahama. Train tickets can be booked for regional and high-speed services depending on the selected station. Book trains from and to Iwakuni online at Rail Monsters.
