Tamana is a rail access point in northern Kumamoto Prefecture, positioned between Kumamoto and the Fukuoka area on Kyushu's main north-south railway corridor. The city is served by two main passenger stations: Shin-Tamana Station on the Kyushu Shinkansen and Tamana Station on the Kagoshima Main Line. JR Kyushu operates both high-speed and conventional rail services in the city.
Trains from Tamana include Kyushu Shinkansen services at Shin-Tamana, mainly Sakura and Tsubame trains, plus JR Kyushu regional trains at Tamana Station. Shin-Tamana handles long-distance rail travel along Kyushu, while Tamana Station serves local and regional trips on the conventional line. The two stations are separate, so passengers should check which train station appears on the ticket before travel.
Rail routes from Tamana run south toward Kumamoto, Yatsushiro, and Kagoshima-Chuo, and north toward Shin-Omuta, Kurume, and Hakata. Some Kyushu Shinkansen services also link Tamana with the Sanyo Shinkansen corridor toward Hiroshima and Shin-Osaka. Book trains from and to Tamana online at Rail Monsters.
