On the Shanghai to Hohhot route, the fastest option is a same-day high-speed combination using G-series services. CR Fuxing high-speed trains run from Shanghai Hongqiao to Beijing South at up to 350 km/h (217 mph), typically taking about 4.5 hours. After a station change within Beijing (to Qinghe or Beijing North), a G-series train continues to Hohhot East via Zhangjiakou, operating at 350 km/h (217 mph) between Beijing and Zhangjiakou and around 250 km/h (155 mph) from Zhangjiakou to Hohhot East. End-to-end travel time is usually 7.5–8.5 hours including the transfer. Seating on these high-speed trains includes Second Class, First Class, and Business Class, with power outlets and trolley service. Note that there is currently no single through high-speed train; at least one change in Beijing is required.
For a direct, one-seat ride, classic overnight Z/T-series trains link Shanghai (main station) with Hohhot, generally taking 18–22 hours. These conventional services run at maximum speeds of about 120–160 km/h (75–99 mph) and offer Hard Seat, Hard Sleeper, and Soft Sleeper classes. Expect simple amenities such as bedding, hot water, and a dining car, making this a practical overnight alternative to the faster high-speed connection.
