G-series high-speed trains on the Shanghai to Chongqing route run between Shanghai Hongqiao and Chongqing West or Chongqing North, typically operated by Fuxing (CR400) and Hexie (CRH380/CRH2) sets. They offer Second and First Class seating, with many services also providing Business Class. On the high-speed corridors east of Wuhan, these trains reach 300–350 km/h (186–217 mph). Due to the mountainous Yichang–Wanzhou section, where line speeds are lower, overall journey time is usually about 9–10 hours with limited stops at major stations such as Nanjing South, Hefei South, Wuhan/Hankou, and Yichang East. The central mountain stretch between Yichang and Wanzhou uses upgraded conventional tracks with typical operating speeds around 160–200 km/h (99–124 mph), which reduces average speed compared with fully high-speed routes. Some slower D-series services on this line are capped at 250 km/h (155 mph) and take roughly 11–13 hours end to end. Conventional overnight Z/T trains run from central Shanghai (Shanghai station) to Chongqing (Chongqing or Chongqing North) on non–high-speed lines, operating at about 120–160 km/h (75–99 mph). These services usually take 20–30 hours and offer Hard/Soft Sleeper and a dining car, while daytime high-speed G trains provide faster travel with modern amenities such as power outlets and trolley or café service.
