High-speed D-series EMU trains operate between Shanghai and Rugaonan with reserved Second and First Class seating, and on select departures a small Business Class section. Running up to 200 km/h (124 mp/h) across the Shanghai–Suzhou–Nantong railway and onward on the Nanjing–Qidong corridor, these services cross the Yangtze River via the Hutong Yangtze River Bridge and usually stop at key stations such as Taicang, Changshu, and Nantong. Typical end-to-end travel time is about 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, depending on the stopping pattern and departure station in Shanghai (Hongqiao or Shanghai Railway Station).
By contrast, conventional services on the same axis—older K/Z trains or EMUs operating on conventional tracks—run at lower speeds, generally 120–160 km/h (75–99 mp/h), make more intermediate stops, and may require a change at Nantong for some itineraries. These options usually take around 2 to 3 hours, suiting travelers heading to smaller stations along the north bank of the Yangtze.
Both train types are air-conditioned with assigned seating, but D-series high-speed trains offer newer rolling stock (Fuxing/CRH sets), power outlets at most seats, and smoother acceleration. Travelers prioritizing a shorter ride should choose the D-series high-speed option, while those seeking broader station coverage can opt for the slower conventional services.
