Two main services cover the Shanghai to Tongnan route, typically with a change in Chongqing. The fastest option uses G-series high-speed trains (Fuxing CR400) from Shanghai Hongqiao to Chongqing West/North at 300–350 km/h (186–217 mph), running via key hubs such as Nanjing South, Xuzhou East, and Zhengzhou East. From Chongqing, a short C/D-series EMU continues to Tongnan at 200–250 km/h (124–155 mph). Expect around 7.5–9 hours to Chongqing plus 60–90 minutes onward to Tongnan, for a total of roughly 9–10.5 hours. G-series trains offer Second, First, and Business Class, with reserved seating, air-conditioning, and power outlets.
As an alternative, D-series Hexie services connect Shanghai with Chongqing North via Wuhan, Yichang East, Enshi, and Wanzhou North. Speeds range 160–250 km/h (99–155 mph), with the mountainous Yiwan Railway segment generally capped at 160–200 km/h (99–124 mph). This leg typically takes about 11–13 hours, followed by 60–90 minutes on a C/D-series EMU to Tongnan, totaling approximately 12.5–14.5 hours. D-series trains usually provide Second and First Class, more intermediate stops, and similar onboard basics. No G-series trains run directly into Tongnan; the final segment uses the regional intercity line.
