High-speed travel on the Shanghai to Hanzhong route is arranged with a same-station transfer at Xi’an North: G-series Fuxing trains run Shanghai Hongqiao to Xi’an North at 300–350 km/h (186–217 mph), taking about 5.5–6 hours and stopping at major hubs such as Xuzhou East, Zhengzhou East, and Luoyang Longmen. From Xi’an North, D- or G-series EMUs on the Xi’an–Chengdu high-speed railway continue to Hanzhong at up to 250 km/h (155 mph), covering this mountainous section in roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes. Overall, the end-to-end journey typically totals about 7.5–8.5 hours including a short change; seating is Second and First Class on all segments, with Business Class available on select Shanghai–Xi’an G-trains.
Conventional K/T/Z services also link Shanghai and Hanzhong (often via Xi’an or Baoji), operating at 120–160 km/h (75–99 mph) and taking around 17–21 hours; these offer hard/soft seat and hard/soft sleeper berths. High-speed G/D trains provide reserved seating, power outlets, air-conditioning, and trolley or dining car service, while classic services suit overnight travel with full sleeper options.
