Two main options operate on the Shanghai to Liupanshui route in China. The fastest is a high-speed segment from Shanghai Hongqiao to Guiyang North or Anshun West via the Shanghai–Kunming High-Speed Railway on G-series trains, running up to 300 km/h (186 mph). This leg typically takes about 7.5–9.5 hours depending on stops. From Guiyang or Anshun, a connecting conventional train continues to Liupanshui at about 120–160 km/h (75–99 mph), taking roughly 2–4 hours due to mountainous terrain and frequent tunnels. High-speed services provide Second Class, First Class, and Business Class seating, with power outlets and trolley service; the onward regional leg usually offers standard seating and basic refreshments. There is currently no through high-speed service directly to Liupanshui. A one-seat alternative is the classic overnight route from Shanghai (usually Shanghai Railway Station) to Liupanshui on Z/T/K-series conventional trains. These operate at around 140–160 km/h (87–99 mph) top speed but average lower with more stops, leading to a total journey time in the range of 22–26 hours. Sleeper options (Hard Sleeper and Soft Sleeper) and seats (Hard/Soft Seat) are available, and many formations include a dining car and hot water for meals. Choose the high-speed plus transfer option for the shortest end-to-end time in a single day, or the direct overnight for a bed and no transfers.
