On the Shanghai to Tongwei route, the quickest option uses China Railway’s G-series high-speed trains from Shanghai Hongqiao toward Gansu, typically via Xuzhou East, Zhengzhou East, Xi’an North and Baoji South to Tianshui South or Dingxi North. These trains run at up to 300–350 km/h (186–217 mph) on the eastern sections, then about 250 km/h (155 mph) west of Xi’an on the Baoji–Lanzhou high-speed line. Rail time to Tianshui South is usually around 7.5–9 hours, followed by a local bus or regional train of about 1–2 hours to reach Tongwei, as Tongwei itself does not have a high-speed station. Seating includes Second, First and Business Class, with reserved seats, power outlets and trolley service.
In comparison, traditional Z/T/K overnight trains on the older Longhai corridor serve Tongwei railway station directly (or via nearby stops), running at roughly 120–160 km/h (75–99 mph) with more intermediate stops. End-to-end times from Shanghai are commonly 20–30 hours depending on the timetable. These classic services offer Hard Seat, Hard Sleeper and Soft Sleeper compartments, a dining car and bed linen, trading speed for a single-seat ride to the county.
For a premium experience, Business Class on high-speed trains provides the most space, while Soft Sleeper is the top tier on conventional services.
