High-speed services between Shanghai and Yancheng offer Second Class and First Class seating across the board, with many G-series sets also featuring Business Class for a more spacious cabin. Trains typically provide power outlets, clean restrooms, and a trolley or vending area for snacks.
The fastest option is the G-series high-speed train (often Fuxing CR400AF/BF sets) running from Shanghai Hongqiao via Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, and Yangzhou to Yancheng. These services use the Beijing–Shanghai High-Speed Railway and the Lianyungang–Zhenjiang High-Speed Railway, operating at up to 300 km/h (186 mph), with sections engineered for 350 km/h (217 mph). End-to-end times are usually around 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes, with limited stops at major hubs.
By comparison, D-series trains run from Shanghai (usually Shanghai Railway Station) via Taicang, Nantong, Haimen, and Dongtai to Yancheng, using the Shanghai–Nantong Railway and the Yancheng–Nantong High-Speed Railway. These EMUs (commonly CRH2/CRH5 types) operate at about 160–200 km/h (99–124 mph) between Shanghai and Nantong and up to 250 km/h (155 mph) toward Yancheng, taking roughly 3 to 3.5 hours due to more intermediate stops. Onboard amenities are similar, but most D-series sets do not include Business Class, making G-series the quicker, more premium choice when schedules align.
