Tainan is a major rail point in southern Taiwan, positioned between Chiayi to the north and Kaohsiung to the south. The city uses two primary rail hubs: TRA Tainan Station in the urban center and THSR Tainan Station in Guiren District. Taiwan High Speed Rail links Tainan with the island's western high-speed corridor, while Taiwan Railways Administration operates conventional intercity and regional trains through the city.
Trains from Tainan include THSR high-speed services, TRA intercity trains, regional stopping trains, and local services serving nearby districts. THSR Tainan Station handles high-speed trains on the north-south corridor, while TRA Tainan Station serves conventional rail through central Tainan. The two stations are separate, and passengers transfer between them by TRA Shalun Line trains between Shalun and central Tainan.
Rail routes from Tainan run north toward Chiayi, Taichung, Taoyuan, and Taipei, and south toward Kaohsiung and Zuoying. TRA services also connect Tainan with smaller stations across southern Taiwan, including Yongkang, Daqiao, Bao'an, and Rende. Book trains from and to Tainan online at Rail Monsters.
