On the Shanghai to Kunming route, China Railway runs two main categories: G-series high-speed trains on the Shanghai–Kunming High-Speed Railway and classic K/T/Z overnight services on the conventional line. G trains provide Second Class, First Class, and Business Class seating, while the conventional services offer Hard Seat, Hard Sleeper (6-berth), and Soft Sleeper (4-berth) options. The fastest G-series services travel from Shanghai Hongqiao to Kunming South in about 10–11 hours. They operate at up to 300 km/h (186 mph) on most sections, with some stretches limited to around 250–280 km/h (155–174 mph). Limited-stop schedules typically include major hubs such as Hangzhou East, Nanchang West, Changsha South, and Guiyang North. Onboard, expect 3–2 seating in Second Class, 2–2 in First Class, and 1–2 lie-flat seating in Business Class, plus power outlets, luggage racks, and a trolley or dining car. By comparison, the conventional K/T/Z trains use the older line to Kunming Railway Station, reaching around 120–160 km/h (75–99 mph) and taking roughly 33–38 hours. These trains include a dining car and sleeper berths suited to overnight travel. For the quickest daytime journey, the G-series high-speed services are the primary option on the Shanghai to Kunming corridor.
