Can I bring a bike on the train?

Yes — but bike rules vary widely depending on the country, train type, and time of day.

Here’s what you should know:

Folding bikes are usually allowed for free as luggage — no extra ticket needed

Standard (non-folding) bikes often require a separate reservation or bike ticket

• Some high-speed and international trains don’t allow bikes at all — unless they are dismantled and bagged

• Bike spaces are limited and must be booked in advance on many routes

When booking with Rail Monsters, we’ll show the bike options during checkout if supported on your route. For countries with strict bike rules, please check our Country Guides or contact [email protected].

Can I bring a snowboard, skis, or large sports gear?

Yes — most sports gear like skis, snowboards, surfboards, or golf bags is allowed as part of your luggage.

However:

• It must be properly packed in a soft or hard case

• You’re responsible for loading and unloading it — no check-in available

• On busy or high-speed trains, space may be limited, and large gear may not fit in overhead racks

For routes popular with skiers or surfers (e.g. Alps, coastal Spain, Japan's ski resorts), we recommend arriving early to find luggage space.

Do I need to pay extra for bikes or sports gear?

Sometimes. It depends on the rail supplier and the country.

Folding bikes and compact gear are usually free

Full-size bikes often require a bike ticket or reservation — shown clearly during booking

• Some routes offer bike-inclusive fares or allow free transport during off-peak hours

Rail Monsters shows all applicable fees upfront — and if your route doesn’t support bikes or large gear, we’ll display a warning before checkout.

If you can’t find the answers you’re looking for, our support team is available 24/7.
