How much luggage can I bring on the train?

Most trains in the world are very flexible with luggage — especially compared to airlines. You don’t need to check your bags, and there are no strict weight controls in most countries.

As a general guideline, passengers can usually bring:

2 medium suitcases or backpacks

1 small carry-on or personal item (handbag, laptop, etc.)

This is more than enough for most travelers. You’ll place your bags:

• On the rack above your seat

• In overhead shelves

• In dedicated luggage spaces at the end of the coach (on some trains)

If you're traveling with bulky items (like bikes or skis), some trains require reservations or additional tickets — see our section on sports equipment.

You will see luggage policy per country when booking, we always show exact policy for each rail operator.

Are there any luggage weight or size limits?

In most cases, no strict enforcement — rail suppliers are much more relaxed than airlines.

However, we recommend keeping bags within these soft limits:

• Around 25–30kg (55–66 lbs) per item

• Not exceeding 90 cm in length (standard medium/large suitcase)

Oversized luggage that blocks aisles, doors, or other passengers may not be accepted. For large items, check country-specific policies or contact our team at [email protected].

Is luggage security a concern? Are bags checked?

Trains do not require luggage check-in or security scans in most countries. You bring your bags onboard yourself.

However:

• Keep valuables in your smaller personal item

• Use luggage locks if possible

• Don’t leave bags unattended at stations or during stops

Rail Monsters does not take responsibility for lost or stolen items — so please stay alert, especially on busy routes or in overnight trains.

Can I bring fragile or expensive items?

Yes, but with caution. You’re responsible for your luggage at all times.

• Fragile electronics or instruments should go in a carry-on or backpack that stays near you

• Don’t store expensive items in external racks unless you're watching them

• In some countries, trains offer luggage compartments you can lock (common in First Class or cabins)

If you're traveling with valuables like instruments, artwork, or equipment, let our support team know in advance — some routes offer special handling options.
